ARLA FOODS : AYLESBURY

Sectors : Industry / Masterplanning / Workplace

Client : Arla Foods

DLA Design were appointed by Arla Foods to design a fresh milk dairy, capable of processing and packaging up to one billion litres of milk per year.

Arla’s key operational requirements were incorporated into the design requiring DLA to work closely with Arla and their preferred specialist equipment suppliers.

Revit 3D modelling software was used collaboratively throughout the project for Architectural, Structural and Services Engineering design. The Revit software assisted greatly with the interfacing of Arla’s specialist internal / external process services, the building structure and fabric.

The dairy walls and roof colours were designed to break-up the building mass by use of randomly patterned composite cladding in four “autumnal” recessive colours picking up the natural colour pallet in the locality of the site.

The development achieved BREEAM ‘Excellent’ accreditation and incorporated the following:-
A sustainable Urban Drainage system was designed with surface water run off restricted by the use of a balancing pond designed to retain water to provide ecological benefit.

An Acoustic Assessment model was prepared to inform the design requirements for the overall Dairy and North sites. Seven metre high landscaped bunding and acoustic fences were provided to 60% of the site to provide mitigation to critical aspects.

Green spaces and habitats were created within the site and a 30m wide landscaped margin was created to 80% of the site perimeter.

The final proposals for the dairy and ancillary buildings created approximately 860,000sqft of new floor area on a 62 acre site i.e. the largest fresh milk processing dairy in Europe.
