Delivering a comprehensive scope of services in-house for this refurb scheme proved crucial in fulfilling the client’s ultimate aspiration of achieving Gold Award in dementia friendly design by Stirling University. We had previously achieved this for a new-built care home, however, this was the first refurbishment accredited the award. According to Lesley Palmer, Chief Architect for Dementia Services Development Centre, Stirling University: “From inception to completion the architect exhibited a fresh and innovative approach to dementia-inclusive design. This included focused client consultation at the outset to establish key product aspirations (for both care provision and design) through to detailed design consultation with manufacturers; to ensure the DSDC design principles were achieved where the end-user requirements demanded bespoke solutions.”

Attention to detail and well-coordinated design with all aspects of clinical care, fire safety, safety, security, infection prevention being built into the design in agreement with all relevant parties was key. According to Andrew Morris, Deputy Director of Estates & Facilities: ‘Working together, you have provided the people of Bradford & Airedale with a dementia assessment unit which, in my view, is without equal in the Country. You have defined a new benchmark for team working and refurbishment which will stand us in good stead for our future refurbishments too.’
