DLA Architecture completed the extension and refurbishment of a former school boarding house in Highgate.
DLA worked closely with City Sq. Solutions to deliver the major extension and refurbishment of a former Victorian school boarding house. The new two storey extension is sensitive to the existing structure with careful consideration given to the enhancements of existing facilities including the upgrading of internal spaces, as well as the creation of additional areas to form new classrooms and key improvements to staff and circulation space.
Detailed attention has also been given to the south-west elevation which provides views looking out onto the landscaping and playground spaces. A beautiful Victorian style veranda has been constructed using a birch plywood grid structure which brings together the overall composition of the rear façade as well as provides a structural solution with a contemporary finish.
The scheme is designed to exceed Part L of the Building Regulations with emphasis on a low carbon footprint by focusing on high thermal performance. Overall, the improvements to the internal spaces will enhance pupils’ engagement with their teaching environment and uphold the school’s ethos on providing a friendly and supportive learning atmosphere.
