DLA Architecture worked with Main Contractor Engie to complete the School of Business and Society for the University of York. This £12 million refurbishment project comprises of seminar / lecture spaces for students and open plan and cellular offices for university staff. The building has increased its amenities with its own brand new on site café and redesigned landscaping which can accommodate a large cycling provision.
The former pharmaceutical building, once used by Smith and Nephew, has used the large volumetric spaces and existing lightwells to its advantage; the double height reception space welcomes students and staff.
The building’s central ‘Agile Working’ collaborative open plan double height office, is naturally lit by the large existing lightwell.
Acoustics were a key factor to consider in this project, with timber batten lined walls interspersed between green moss walls. The natural material palette used in conjunction with natural lighting within a deep plan help to create a vibrant and welcoming environment for staff to work in.
