SOUTH RUISLIP : LONDON

Sectors : Retail / Leisure

Client : Albemarle Developments Ltd (CityGrove)

The South Ruislip scheme, in West London, is a mixed use development consisting of an Asda supermarket and petrol filling station, 11 screen Cineworld cinema and 5No. family themed restaurants, namely Nandos, Bella Italia, Mimosa, Frankie & Bennys and Chiquitos. The project redeveloped a brown field site previously occupied by an Arla Dairy.

The design ethos was to masterplan a new destination within the South Ruislip district centre. This knitted together the commercial development with a new residential development via a tree lined avenue headed by a new public square offering access to each of the units.

The site is located below the flightpath of the adjacent RAF Northolt. Minimising external noise break-in was therefore of crucial importance in the specification of the cinema external envelope.

The metallic black façade treatment successfully merges disparate design requirements of sweeping curves providing an inviting urban environment, contrasting with more dynamic angular elements including main entrance interventions. The façade is accentuated by the irregular provision of illuminated lightboxes giving the impression of falling shards.

Owing to site confines, both the cinema and supermarket principle retail footprints are elevated to first floor level, creating a covered car park at ground level. Access to first floor levels being achieved by escalators, travelators, lifts and stairs. The car parking complement is 506 spaces which includes 51 electric car charging spaces.
