DLA were awarded unanimous first place from an international field of 112 entries to provide a new Community Arts and Cultural Centre for Northwich, Cheshire. The scheme proposes a modern version of a covered meeting place, or ‘Agora’, first identified in Roman times. The building is presented as a cloister on timber supports, but with a substantial part of the space underneath enclosed, using a mixture of glazing, render and timber framing, all of which reference the local architectural language. The materials used are natural, locally sourced, and offer a cost-effective solution to provide a vibrant and multi-functional community space containing theatre, performance & gallery spaces.
