Field House, Dewsbury Starts on Site

It’s fantastic to see works starting on site for the change of use, refurbishment and extension of the Grade 2 listed Field House in Dewsbury.

The scheme will create 23 new apartments (including 7no. penthouse duplex apartments), with ~720m² A3 use at ground floor and basement levels. A mix of generously proportioned one, two and three bedroom apartments are designed to cater for a wide variety of households, including families, to encourage the development of a stable and sustainable community.

To unlock the potential of Field House, the proposals have been carefully developed in conjunction with key stakeholders including Local Authority Planning and Historic England, to balance the sensitivities of working with a prominent heritage asset with the ambition to create an emblematic symbol of regeneration and the arrest of decline. All interventions have been carefully designed to be clearly “of their time” and readable as such:

– Clearly defined building entrances.
– Use a limited palette of new materials with repeated details.
– Window replacements to read as recessive to the dominant Italianate stone facades,
– The creation of a roof-scape that is sympathetic to neighbouring buildings and enhances the grouping,
– Work with and take advantage of the existing strong horizontal contextual characteristics.

These proposals offer the investment opportunity to revitalise and bring back into sustainable use, a currently vacant and neglected listed building, as a catalyst to encourage the further regeneration of Dewsbury town centre. The scheme will create a positive sense of arrival to Dewsbury, complementing and animating the new high-quality public realm at the railway station forecourt.

Works are due to complete in May 2025.
