Our scheme for Arla’s one-billion litre per annum fresh milk dairy, located on a 65-acre site, exemplifies the company's dedication to growth, sustainability, and innovation in milk processing.
This flagship dairy development and bespoke milk & cream processing facility, has been designed to support Arla’s long-term strategy of enhancing performance in milk processing and to exclusively process British milk, reinforcing a commitment to sustaining British dairy farming.
The development comprises of; the main dairy, milk silos, energy efficient state of the art office building, Energy Centre and a Transport Office.
01 Stakeholder Engagament
Having been involved from inception, (prior to the final choice of site being finalised), we assisted Arla by contributing to the design and operational functionality of the proposed facility. A significant contribution to Arla’s own objectives came through us developing a detailed understanding of Arla’s operating methods and processes.
Key to the projects success was assisting Arla’s key Stakeholders, Technical Standards Officers, Specialist Process Equipment Suppliers etc, in marrying the building design with various process flows and working practices.
02 Approach to design
Due to the scale and complexity of this project, it was vital we developed a thorough understanding on the processes and workflows involved in production. We were also working towards achieving Arla’s ambition of the world’s first zero carbon milk processing facility, meaning all decisions needed to take into consideration the impact they would have on the environment. As part of the development we provided a linked office/administration block, corridors with viewing windows and school rooms for educational visits, warehouse space, recycling stores, staff amenity spaces as well as technical spaces for milk chilling, pasteurisation and storage.
The arrangement of the Dairy accommodation was created on the 65 acre site through the creation of various Concepts and Layout Options, leading to the final version (Option 13”b”), which was ultimately adopted fully by Arla for construction.
03 Climate leadership
Arla set an ambitious goal for the facility to become the world’s first zero-carbon milk processing plant. To achieve this, extensive environmental impact assessments were conducted during the design phase, leading to the incorporation of advanced construction techniques, state-of-the-art process technologies, and cutting-edge renewable energy solutions.
The development achieved BREEAM “Excellent”.
