Willow Green Distribution Centre occupies a 59 acre site and provides a total of 780,000 sqft of Ambient, Chilled, Frozen and Bread Warehouses together with Resource Recycling and Vehicle Maintenance Units for WM Morrisons. When at full capacity, the RDC can service over 65 stores.

01 Site Context
Located in a prominent and strategic position in the South-West of England immediately adjacent to the M5, the design inspiration came from the local craft of weaving willow. We worked with the client to create a landmark building for Bridgwater, whilst maintaining a synergy with its semi-rural surroundings.



02 Project Narrative
The Centre was developed to support Morrisons stores across the South-west and South Wales, enhancing logistics efficiency within these regions. During the design development phase, a detailed review of Morrisons’ existing RDC operations was undertaken to inform improvements to logistics and building performance.
Designed as a benchmark for low-carbon, sustainable development, the scheme prioritised the reduction of passive carbon emissions. Over 15% of the warehouse roof is fitted with rooflights to maximise natural daylighting and provide natural ventilation, supplemented by sensor-controlled lighting. Glazed façades and sun tubes deliver natural light to office areas, while a highly airtight building envelope minimises heat loss and uncontrolled air infiltration.
03 Passionate about delivery
The development was delivered in a fast track 50 week construction period Consolidating Morrison’s logistic infrastructure. The development has brought economy to the business by reducing fleet mileage, centralising and streamlining all logistical operations.

04 Climate Leadership
Sustainability was embedded from the outset. Although the planning condition required a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating, Morrisons voluntarily raised the ambition to achieve ‘Excellent’ in line with its corporate commitment to reducing carbon emissions. This enhanced target was supported by on-site renewable energy solutions and a wide range of low-carbon design measures.
This rating was achieved through the integration of photovoltaics, solar thermal heating, air source heat pumps, intelligent LED lighting systems, rainwater harvesting, waste heat reclamation, and on-site waste recycling. Designed as a benchmark for sustainable development, the scheme prioritised the reduction of passive carbon emissions.
