01 Introduction

The new civic center of Oaklands College’s St Albans campus

The Creative Gateway will be a new focal point at the heart of Oaklands College, St Albans campus life. Bringing together creative teaching spaces, reception, front-of-house functions, informal study and meeting areas, the Digital Learning Centre, café and administrative staff spaces, it is designed as both the outward face of the college and a shared resource for students and staff. Positioned between the High Needs Centre, Construction Centre and College Square, it will define a clear point of arrival and a focal point for the campus.

02 Site & Building History

Background to the masterplan

The Creative Gateway forms part of the wider regeneration of Oaklands College’s St Albans campus. Once a manor house and former agricultural college, the campus has evolved over time through an assortment of teaching buildings set within its grounds. Although a highly successful college, much of the estate is no longer fit for purpose and needs renewal to meet modern requirements. The wider masterplan responds by replacing outdated buildings with a more coherent and contemporary further education campus, organised around new teaching environments, improved landscape and clearer connections. Within this framework, the Creative Gateway is proposed as a key building at the heart of the campus, positioned between the High Needs Centre, the Construction Centre and College Square to help define arrival, orientation and everyday college life.

03 Approach to Design

The Creative Gateway is designed as the public face of the college and the shared centre of campus life, bringing together learning, support and social space in a building that feels open, visible and easy to use. Its architectural language responds to the Mansion House with a contemporary civic character, expressed through its massing, material palette and public presence. A layered composition of stone-coloured brick and cladding gives the building a robust identity, while the glazed lantern will mark the entrance and signal the college centre.

Internally, the building is organised around a mix of formal and informal spaces that support the everyday life of students. Reception will provide a visible point of support for a wide range of needs, including IT and student services, while the café, Forum and Digital Learning Centre are designed to create spaces for informal learning, meeting and social opportunities. Together, these elements create a building that supports daily student life as well as wider college activity, giving the Creative Gateway a clear civic role within Oaklands.

04 Consultation and Engagement

The brief for the Creative Gateway reflects many overlapping needs of the college. Teaching, study, support, administration and social space are brought together in a single facility, creating a hub intended to respond to the needs of students and staff.

Throughout the development of the masterplan our approach has included collaboration with young people, through a series of engagement sessions, ensuring their needs shaped the design of both living and learning environments. Empowering young people, the consultation process and subsequent design provide spaces that encourage personal development and community participation.

We have engaged directly with the College Senior Leadership team over several years, supporting them in developing and refining design proposals in response to a shifting marketing and evolving business case.
