Oaklands College Masterplan | Design Process
We use model making as a design tool for both our own internal design development and as a tool to communicate our ideas during client and community engagement meetings with college staff and the senior leadership team.
For Oaklands College, this final model illustrates the new squares, character areas, learning streets, and the varied form and scale of the proposed masterplan.
Models evolved from simple massing studies to a detailed presentation piece, all produced with in-house 3D printing, laser cutting, and etched trees.
Early versions of the masterplan model used card and a rollable cork base for transport, before being developed into a more permanent model using birch plywood for the base with trees and a protective acrylic lid.
This model is a cost and time-effective tool that Oaklands uses to present its future masterplan to prospective students, governors, and sponsors.

“This process created a clear, legible model using efficient methods we can reproduce quickly to keep pace with the extensive programme for each building and landscape.”
