Learning
With a proud history and desire to embrace the future and provide for its community, it was important that the new build addition sit harmoniously beside the original school building whilst providing exemplary facilities for students.
Due to an increasing demand for school places at Bottisham Village College, we were appointed to design an expansion of the current facilities from a 7FE to 10FE School, which reflected the schools standing as an “Outstanding” Ofsted provider.
Creating an inspirational environment for pupils to thrive and reach their full potential
The project involved a major two-storey extension to the school’s current facilities, including the brand-new Morris Wing comprising of general teaching classrooms, an auditorium, a dining hall overlooking the school’s sports facilities, dance and recording studios and a suite of practice rooms, all of which support the school’s strong arts ethos. A new link corridor connects the extension to the existing building.
We also undertook remodelling works to the original school including widening existing corridors and relocation of the main school entrance and reception area. The original 1937 school hall has been transformed into a new community hub library, which will host workshops and inspirational talks supporting the needs of the local community. Two new flood lit MUGA’s have been installed and the college’s car parking facilities and bus bays were expanded to meet the needs of the additional students.
Connecting Landscapes
The school site sits on the threshold between the urban area of Bottisham Village and the wider open countryside to the east. The school site can be seen as acting as a link between these opposing landscape fabrics, with the school buildings and grounds defining the urban village edge, whilst also acting as a gateway to the wider rural landscape beyond.
The following film was made by former pupils from Bottisham Village College and filmmaker Peter Harmer with support from a dedicated team of Year 8 students of the college. The film honours the legacy of the Village College founder Henry Morris and showcases the extraordinary new 2018 facilities now in use. The focus on architecture and design is from 17 minutes: https://vimeo.com/298781450
Morgan Sindall Construction created the following film with feedback from Jenny Rankine, Principal at Bottisham Village College, with her views of the school design and team collaboration throughout the project: Bottisham Village College – A vision exceeded – YouTube
